ExperienceWorked while attending college as a Permanent Substitute Teacher at an alternative school, preparing high school students for graduation.
The Campus is a drop-out recovery center for high school students where students are two or more years behind. Many have had past disciplinary problems, attendance problems, or have had babies. The school helps to graduate students who otherwise may have never returned to the classroom.
As a permanent substitute, I taught classes in career development, budgeting, math, and nutritional sciences. I was responsible for developing syllabi, quizzes and testing material, which follow the school board circulum.
Provided instruction, encouraged student progress, and managed the learning environment. Adapted subject material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guided and challenged students.
Conferred with parents and guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems. Conferred with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula. Guided and counseled students with adjustment and academic problems, and special academic interests. Prepared, administered, and graded tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress. Instructed students individually and in groups. Kept informed about trends in education and subject matter specialties. Prepared evaluation and student assessments.
Established clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicated those objectives to students. Observed and evaluated students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health. Encourage students to think independently and express original ideas. Used computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations. Met with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress. Maintained accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations. Maintained high standards of excellence.
Additionlly I worked as a tutor for a private non-profit organization which operated in partnership with the Juvenile Probation Department. I was responsible in providing remedial education to young offenders and at-risk youth (13-18 years of age.) I taught academic subjects including english, mathematics, and reading.
